운염도의 추억

2016년 6월, 사진을 하는 사람이라면 한 번쯤 가봐야 할 곳으로 인천 영종도 옆에 있는 작은 섬인데 우리나라에서는 좀처럼 볼 수 없으며, 거북등처럼 쫙쫙 갈라진 땅으로 정기출사를 간다기에 많이 기대하면서 정기출사를 했던 기억이 난다.

그 당시 현장에 도착하자 갈라진 땅이 군데군데 웅덩이처럼 움푹 파인 곳이 있었는데 그 곳에 물이 고이면 반영사진으로 멋진 작품을 만들 수 있고, 물이 없으면 물을 퍼 담았다가 반영사진을 찍었다는 얘기도 있었다.

 2026년 6월, 우연히 둘러본 운염도의 변한 모습을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 운염도는 원래 무인도였으나 일제 강점기때부터 사람이 살기 시작했는데 과거에 인천항 수심 유지를 위해 시행하던 항로 준설로 발생한 준설토를 운염도 주변에 투기하던 곳이었다. 투기 이후 장기간 방치 되었던 유휴 항만부지가 항만재개발사업을 통해 복합 해양관광레저도시로 탈바꿈할 계획인데, 현재 도로, 공원, 화장실, 녹지 등의 기반시설 조성을 완료하였으며, 골프장만 개장 운영되고 있는 곳이다.

이 사진들은 이제 지상에서 영원히 사라진 풍경의 마지막 초상화다. 이 변화가 옳고 그름의 문제는 아닐지도 모른다. 다만, 이 풍경이 더 이상 스스로의 시간을 갖지 못하게 되었다는 사실은 분명하다.

Memories of Unyeomdo

In June 2016, I remember going on a regular group photoshoot with high expectations, as it was known as a must-visit place for photographers. It is a small island next to Yeongjongdo in Incheon, featuring a cracked terrain like a turtle's back, a rare sight in South Korea. Upon arriving at the site back then, the cracked earth had hollow depressions here and there, resembling puddles. There were stories that if water filled these spots, one could create magnificent works of reflection photography, and if there was no water, people would even fetch and pour water themselves to capture those reflections.

In June 2026, I happened to visit Unyeomdo again and was astonished by its transformed appearance. Unyeomdo was originally an uninhabited island, but people began to settle there during the Japanese colonial period. In the past, it was a site where dredged soil, generated from maintaining the water depth of Incheon Port, was dumped around the island. This idle port area, left abandoned for a long time after the dumping, is now planned to transform into a complex marine tourism and leisure city through a port redevelopment project. Currently, the construction of infrastructure such as roads, parks, restrooms, and green spaces has been completed, and only the golf course is open and in operation.

These photographs are now the final portraits of a landscape that has vanished from the earth forever. This transformation might not be a question of right or wrong. However, it is certain that this landscape can no longer possess its own time.
