11개국 국제사진 교류전 : 대양 그리고 환경 - Ocean and Environment

대양은 한 나라의 것이 아닙니다. 모든 해안을 적시며 대륙과 대륙을 잇고, 하늘과 땅과 생명을 하나의 거대한 순환으로 묶어 냅니다. 그 광활한 물의 흐름을 따라가다 보면, 우리는 어느새 환경이라는 더 큰 이야기와 마주하게 됩니다. 같은 바다, 같은 하늘 아래에서도 사람은 저마다 다른 것을 봅니다.

누군가는 부서지는 파도와 노을에 잠긴 대양에서 자연의 숭고함에 압도되고, 누군가는 갯벌에 엎드린 몸과 화산섬의 고된 일상에서 자연과 더불어 살아가는 법을 읽어 냅니다. 또 누군가는 급변하는 내륙의 도시와 사람이 떠난 오염된 땅에서, 우리가 환경에 새겨 온 위태로운 자국을 응시합니다. 11개국에서 모인 시선들은 이렇게 서로 다른 위도와 경도에서 출발하지만, 끝내 하나의 깨달음으로 모여듭니다. 바다도 땅도 더 이상 인간의 바깥에 놓인 순수한 자연이 아니며, 우리가 환경을 바라보는 방식이 곧 우리 자신을 비추는 거울이라는 사실입니다.

조류는 대양의 시간이면서, 동시에 우리 시대를 떠미는 흐름이기도 합니다. 기후 위기와 환경 파괴라는 거대한 물결 앞에서, 이 사진들은 흐름에 휩쓸려 같은 경고를 되풀이하기보다 잠시 멈춰 그 너머를 바라봅니다. 물결이 지나간 자리에 무엇이 남았는지, 우리는 바다와, 그리고 우리를 둘러싼 환경과 어떤 관계를 다시 맺어야 하는지를 서로 다른 언어로 함께 묻습니다. 자연의 위대함에 대한 경외와 그것을 위협하는 인간 활동에 대한 경고를 나란히 품으면서, 이 전시는 두 흐름이 만나는 자리 너머, 인간과 자연이 함께 살아갈 내일을 향해 시선을 던집니다.

International Photography Exchange of 11 Countries: Ocean and Environment

The ocean belongs to no single nation. It washes every shore, joins continent to continent, and binds sky, land, and life into one vast cycle. As we follow that immense flow of water, we soon find ourselves face to face with a larger story—that of the environment. Under the same sea and the same sky, each person sees something different.

Some are overwhelmed by the sublimity of nature in breaking waves and an ocean steeped in sunset; some read the way of living alongside nature in a body bent over the mudflats and in the hard daily life of a volcanic island. Others gaze upon the precarious marks we have left on the environment, in rapidly changing inland cities and in polluted land the people have left behind. The gazes gathered from eleven countries set out from such different latitudes and longitudes, yet they converge in the end upon a single realization: that neither sea nor land is any longer a pure nature lying outside of humanity, and that the way we look at the environment is a mirror reflecting ourselves.

Tides are the time of the ocean, and at once a current that drives our era. Before the immense wave of climate crisis and environmental destruction, these photographs do not let themselves be swept along to repeat the same warning, but pause for a moment to look beyond it. They ask together, in different languages, what has remained where the wave has passed, and what relationship we must forge anew with the sea and with the environment surrounding us. Holding side by side both awe at the grandeur of nature and a warning against the human activity that threatens it, this exhibition casts its gaze beyond the place where the two currents meet, toward a tomorrow in which humanity and nature live together.
