In this recent series by Márk-Erik Torkos, no single central concept presides. As the artist himself notes, the selection was made intuitively, and that very looseness sets the work's rhythm. Many of the images are landscapes passed through "filters" shaped by weather — snow, fog, night (Dam in Winter, Fog, Snow). The conditions are not mere atmosphere but a second hand that redraws the land.
The most methodologically intriguing gesture lies in the works built from layered frames extracted from drone footage. In Landscape Drawing – frame stacked motion, the movement of a herd is condensed into something like a single drawing; here photography moves beyond record to make the trajectory of time itself visible. Elsewhere, a group of nature-art works made in Mongolia (Path for the Spirits, Place for Myself, Supplement) are minute gestures left within the landscape. They are not scars, and they vanish within a few hours. Marking the artist's presence only to disappear, these traces feel their way along the thin border between intervention and humility.
The most singular frame in the series is Coolingtower, its only depiction of a human-made structure. Yet the artist does not indict it; he attends solely to its structural form, letting its circle resonate strangely with the circular shapes that surface on ice (Iceforms). When the artificial circle and the natural one fold into the same geometry, the line dividing them dims. The works not made in Mongolia were photographed across various regions of Transylvania, Romania. Beings of Nature is, in the end, a lyrical narrative about the inseparability of humans and nature: we are neither apart from it nor merely a part of it — we are one with it.
Márk-Erik Torkos is a photographer and multidisciplinary artist of Hungarian ethnicity, based in Romania. He lives in Oradea and grew up in Nușfalău; after completing his secondary education in Șimleu Silvaniei, he studied fine arts and graphic design at both bachelor's and master's levels in Oradea. He currently works full-time as a photojournalist.
As a multidisciplinary artist he shifts his medium according to the themes he engages, but keeps image-making—where he feels most at home—at the center of his practice, with photography as his primary medium. He is deeply interested in the relationship between humans and landscape, the duality of built and natural environments, and the human being as both participant in and shaper of these spaces. In 2025 he took part as a film-workshop artist in Kopia Tábor, the creative camp of KopiaKollektiva, an organization devoted to bringing and teaching contemporary photography and experimental moving image in regions where contemporary art rarely reaches.
