기묘한 만남 Strange Encounters / 중국 China

인생 여정 속 성장 환경, 기억, 감정, 경험 등은 모두 그 사람의 가치관에 필연적인 영향을 미친다. 예술가의 작품 역시 이러한 것들이 남긴 깊은 흔적에서 벗어날 수 없다. 나의 어린 시절은 혼돈스러운 “문화대혁명” 시기를 겪었다. 청년기에는 열정 넘치는 80년대를 맞이했고, 중년 이후에는 역사상 유례없는 “중국 기적”을 목격했다. 아마도 개인적인 경험과 감정 때문일 것이다. 내가 살고 있는 중국 내륙, 특히 상대적으로 “발전이 뒤처진” 서북 지역에서 현재 일어나고 있는 인문 민속, 역사 변천, 생존 환경 등 사회적 “급변”의 장면에 거의 집착에 가까운 관심을 갖게 되었다. 나의 작품은 지난 20여 년 동안 카메라로 이를 지속적으로 관찰하고, 사유하고, 기록한 결과물이다. 이 작품들 속에는 기이하고 황당하거나, 모순으로 가득하거나, 상상하기 어려운 장면들이 담겨 있다. 그것들은 종종 나와 그 장면들 사이의 “기묘한 만남”이며, 서로를 찾아가는 과정에서 생겨난 것이다. 이들은 내 내면과 현실의 대화이자, 고향에 대한 향수이다. 예술에 대한, 현실에 대한, 미래에 대한 나의 태도를 적절히 반영하고 있다.

The environment one grows up in, along with memory, emotion, and experience, inevitably shapes a person's values, and an artist's work can never escape the deep imprint they leave. My childhood passed through the chaos of the Cultural Revolution; my youth coincided with the impassioned 1980s; and in middle age I have witnessed the "Chinese miracle," unprecedented in history. Perhaps because of these personal experiences and feelings, I have developed an almost obsessive fascination with the social upheaval now unfolding across China's interior — and especially across the relatively "underdeveloped" Northwest — in its folk customs, its historical transformations, and its conditions of survival. My work is the fruit of nearly two decades spent observing, contemplating, and recording these scenes with my camera. At once strange and absurd, contradictory, and scarcely believable, they are often "chance encounters" between the scenes and myself, born in the course of our seeking one another out. They are a dialogue between my inner world and reality, and a homesickness for my native land — fittingly reflecting my attitude toward art, toward reality, and toward the future. 

시에 아이준(谢爱军)은 1961년 산시(陕西)에서 태어났으며, 청소년 시절 신장(新疆)에서 생활하였다. 1988년에 시안 미술학원(西安美术学院) 판화과를 졸업하고, 학교에 남아 판화 교육과 창작에 종사했다. 1996년부터 사진 교육과 창작도 병행하였고, 시안 미술학원 판화과 사진 및 영상 연구실 부주임, 영화 애니메이션과 부주임, 석사 연구생 지도 교수를 역임했다. 현재 중국 사진가 협회 사진 교육 위원회 위원이며, 산시성 사진가 협회 부회장이다.시안, 핑야오, 다리, 르장위, 리수 등지에서 다수의 사진 개인전을 개최했고, 국내외 사진 그룹전에 참여했다. 그의 작품은 다수 예술 기관과 개인 소장가에게 수집되었으며, 여러 권위 있는 사진 전문 서적에 수록되었다. 또한 중국 사진가 대규모 전람, 중국 청년 사진가 대전 심사위원을 역임했다.

Xie Aijun was born in 1961 in Shaanxi Province and spent his adolescence in Xinjiang. In 1988 he graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, where he remained as a faculty member devoted to the teaching and practice of printmaking. In 1996 he expanded into the teaching and practice of photography. He has served as head of the photography teaching office in the Printmaking Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts and as deputy director of its Film and Animation Department, as well as a master's degree supervisor. He is currently a member of the Photography Education Committee of the China Photographers Association and vice-chairman of the Shaanxi Photographers Association. He has held solo exhibitions in Xi'an, Pingyao, Dali, Lianzhou, Lishui, and other cities, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in China and abroad. His photographs are held by many art institutions and private collectors at home and abroad and have been included in several important photographic publications. He has also served as a juror for the China Photography Art Exhibition and the China Youth Photography Exhibition.
