작은 새싹

우리는 사진에서 늘 '주제'를 찾으려 한다. 사진이 현실에 닻을 내리고 있기에 당연한 일이다. 이 사진의 주제는 벽 위에서 가까스로 살아남으려는 작은 새싹이다. 당신이 이 글을 읽을 즈음이면 그 새싹은 분명 사라지고 없을 것이다. 그러나 그 자리에 또 다른 새싹이, 그리고 또 다른 새싹이 돋아날 것이다. 모두 한 줌 흙에 매달린 채, 모두 바다 곁에서.

그러나 그것은 평온한 바다가 아니다. 인간에 의해 질식당한 바다다. 그리고 그 한가운데에는 어쩌면 우리 인류세의 가장 큰 원인이 자리한다. 죽은 공룡들, 곧 석유.

A Tiny Seedling

We are used to looking for the subject in a photograph — and rightly so, for photography is anchored to reality. In this image, the subject is a tiny seedling struggling to survive on a wall. By the time you read these words it will surely have vanished, but others will have sprouted in its place, and then more — all clinging to a finger of soil, all beside the sea.

But it is not a gentle sea. It is a sea suffocated by humankind, and at the very heart of it lies perhaps the primary cause of our Anthropocene: dead dinosaurs — oil.

로베르토 페스타리노(Roberto Pestarino, 1966년 이탈리아 출생)는 20년 넘게 텔레비전 없이 동물들과 함께 살아왔다. 2010년부터 사진에 전념해 왔으며, 실패와 부진으로 가득했던 첫해를 지나 2012년 첫 성취를 거두었다. 같은 시기 국제사진상(IPA)에서 수상했고, 국제 공모전에서 수상한 그의 사진 한 점은 파리 프랑스 국립도서관(BnF)에 영구 소장되었다.

그는 고전적 거리 사진에서부터 마네킹, 건축물, 바닥에 놓인 사물에 이르기까지 폭넓은 대상을 다루지만, 가장 사랑하는 것은 다큐멘터리 사진이다. 사진이란 지역과 사회적 문제에 개입하는 매체라는 가르침을 받았기에, 그는 이 작업에 오랜 시간과 도전적인 프로젝트들을 바쳐 왔다. 그중에는 끊임없이 변화하는 중요한 사회적 이슈를 짧은 사진 연작으로 담아내는 '쇼트 프로젝트'도 있다. 현재는 도시의 고단함(urban hardship)을 주제로 한 연작을 진행 중이다. 홈페이지: www.fotorobit.it

Roberto Pestarino (b. 1966, Italy) has lived for over twenty years without television and in the company of animals. He has devoted himself to photography since 2010. After a first year marked by failure and poor results, he found his first recognition in 2012, winning awards at the International Photography Awards (IPA); one of his images, honored in an international competition, entered the permanent collection of the National Library of France (BnF) in Paris.

Pestarino works across a wide range of subjects — from classic street photography to mannequins, buildings, and objects found on the ground — but documentary photography is closest to his heart, drawn as he is to its power to engage with the land and with social issues. He has devoted many years and demanding projects to this pursuit, including his "short projects": brief sequences of images dedicated to pressing, ever-shifting social questions.
