썰물 이후 — 바다와 몸 / 한국
이 작업은 몇 해 전 한국 바다 살리기 프로젝트에 참여하며 촬영한 사진들에서 시작되었다. 그러나 나에게 바다는 보호해야 할 자연도, 환경 문제의 대상도 아니었다. 그곳은 노동과 생명의 순환, 시간이 물질 위에 천천히 새겨지는 표면이었다.
썰물이 지나간 자리에는 바다가 감추고 있던 것들이 드러난다. 갯벌 위에 새겨진 퇴적의 결, 증발 뒤 남겨진 소금의 결정, 생선의 피부와 얼굴. 그리고 평생 바다와 함께 살아온 해녀와 채집자들의 몸. 카메라는 그 드러남 앞에 머물렀다.
생명을 길어 올리는 손과 갯벌의 표면, 바다의 물질성과 인간의 몸은 끊임없이 서로를 바꾸며 하나의 풍경이 된다. 이 사진들로 나는 그 풍경 안에 잠시 머물게 하고 싶었다. 인간과 자연이 하나의 순환 속에서 서로를 만들어 가고 있다는 것을, 말이 아닌 표면으로 감각하게 하고 싶었다.
썰물은 바다에만 오지 않는다. 한때 바다와 함께 살았던 삶의 방식들, 몸으로 익힌 관계들이 서서히 빠져나가는 시대에, 이 사진들은 그 자리에 남겨진 것들을 바라본다. 우리가 지켜야 하는 것은 바다라는 대상이 아니라, 인간과 자연이 함께 지속될 수 있는 관계의 감각이다.

After the Ebb — Sea and Body / Korea
This work began with photographs taken several years ago during a project to restore the Korean sea. But the sea, for me, was never simply nature to be protected, nor a site of environmental crisis. It was a surface — one where human labor and the cycles of life slowly inscribed themselves into matter.
Where the tide pulls back, what the sea had concealed is laid bare. The layered grain of tidal flat sediment, salt crystals left behind after evaporation, the skin and faces of fish. And the bodies of haenyeo and gatherers who have spent their lives alongside the sea. The camera lingered before that exposure.
The hands that draw life from the water, the surface of the mudflat, the materiality of the sea and the human body — these are in constant exchange, shaping one another into a single landscape. With these photographs, I wanted to invite a pause inside that landscape. To feel, not through words but through surface, that humans and nature are not apart from one another — that they are, together, making each other.
The ebb does not come only to the sea. In a time when ways of living with the sea are quietly receding — when knowledge held in the body is slowly being lost — these photographs look at what remains. What we are called to protect is not the sea as object, but the felt sense of a relationship in which humans and nature might continue, together.

조선희 작가는 늘 바다와 함께 살아가는 어업인들을 관찰하며 그들에게서 바다를 닮은 순간들을 포착했다. 바다와 우리의 삶을 이어주는 어업인들의 삶 속에서 풍요롭고 경이로운 찰나의 순간들을 조명하며, 공경과 감사를 표한다. 이번 작품들을 통해 어업인들의 생생한 삶을 경험할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 작가 특유의 순간적인 재치가 담긴 독특한 구도와 감각적인 색감으로 표현한 예술적인 작품세계 또한 엿볼 수 있다.

Even in a fleeting instance, she presents highly fashionable work that maximizes the most beautiful and aesthetic moments drawn from the subject’s inherent identity.
Constantly observing the fishers who live their lives alongside the ocean, Cho Sun-hee has captured moments within them that resemble the sea itself. By illuminating the rich and wondrous moments in the lives of these fishers—who connect our daily lives to the ocean—she expresses her deep respect and gratitude. Through these works, viewers can not only experience the vivid realities of the fishers' lives, but also glimpse an artistic world expressed through the artist’s signature instantaneous wit, unique compositions, and sensual color palettes.
