From Small Streams to the Big Ocean /  베트남 Vietnam

인간과 마찬가지로 물 역시 자신만의 여정을 지니고 있다고 생각한다. 물 한 방울이 광활한 바다에 몰입하기까지의 과정은 길고 험난한 여정이며, 그 속에서 물은 냇가가 되기도 하고, 강이 되기도 하며, 때로는 바다가 되는 등 수많은 서로 다른 상태를 거친다. 물은 인간의 삶에서 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있으며, 인간은 물의 이러한 다양한 상태에 적응하고 조화를 이루며 살아가야 한다.

이번 사진 프로젝트를 위해 나는 베트남 북부의 작은 냇가를 찾아갔고, 강줄기를 따라 베트남 남부의 바다로 향했다. 냇가와 강, 바다 주변에 살아가는 사람들뿐만 아니라, 이곳들과 멀리 떨어진 곳에 살면서도 물을 얻기 위해 노력하고, 생존 환경에 적응하며, 물과 상호 의존하는 사람들의 일상을 카메라에 담았다. 나아가 그들이 자신들과 공존하는 대자연과 아름다운 고향을 어떻게 보살피고 사랑하는지 그 모습 또한 포착하고자 했다. ‘냇가에서 바다로’는 단순히 물방울의 여정일 뿐만 아니라 나의 여정이기도 하며, 어쩌면 당신의 여정이기도 할 것이다.

I believe that, just like humans, water has its own journey. The path from a single drop of water to becoming immersed in the vast ocean is a long journey encompassing many different states—sometimes it is a stream, sometimes a river, and at times the sea. Water plays a vital role in human life, and through these diverse states, people must adapt and harmonize with it.

For this photography project, I traveled to small streams in Northern Vietnam, followed the rivers, and headed down to the ocean in Southern Vietnam. I photographed the daily lives of people living by these streams, rivers, and seas, as well as those living far from them—capturing how they strive to obtain water, how they adapt to their survival environments, and how they live in interdependence with water, even caring for the nature and beautiful homelands they coexist with. “From Small Streams to the Big Ocean” is not only the journey of a raindrop, but also my journey, and perhaps, your journey as well.

동 히에우(Đồng Hiếu)는 베트남 하노이 연극영화대학교(Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema) 사진예술학과장으로 재직하며 후학 양성과 창작 활동을 병행하고 있는 베트남의 대표적인 현대 사진가이자 교육자이다. 20년이 넘는 시간 동안 사진 매체를 탐구해 온 그는 일상(Daily life)과 라이프스타일 사진 분야에서 깊이 있고 감수성 넘치는 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 베트남 기자협회, 인민일보 등 국가적 규모의 사진 공모전 심사위원으로 활동하며 현지 사진계에서 높은 신뢰를 받고 있다. 그는 단순히 눈앞의 현실을 기록하는 것을 넘어, 삶의 거대한 흐름 속에서 진정성 있는 찰나의 순간을 포착해 빛과 색채, 구도로 서사를 시각화하는 데 탁월하다. 대상과의 깊은 교감과 정직한 시선을 바탕으로 관객에게 따뜻한 감정적 연결과 깊은 울림을 선사한다.

Đồng Hiếu is a prominent contemporary Vietnamese photographer and educator who currently serves as the Head of the Art Photography Department at the Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema. With a career spanning over twenty years, he has developed a deeply evocative and nuanced body of work centered around daily life and lifestyle photography. Highly respected within the Vietnamese photographic community, he frequently serves as a juror for prestigious national competitions, including those organized by the Journalists' Association and Nhân Dân Newspaper. Moving beyond the mere recording of reality, Đồng Hiếu excels at capturing fragments of ordinary life and transforming them into compelling visual stories through his masterly use of light, color, and composition. Grounded in sincerity and deep connection with his subjects, his work invites viewers into a powerful emotional dialogue.
