Guopu—That Touch of Red in the Wumeng Mountains

From 2012 to the present, I have returned to this land several times each year, attempting to use the method of visual documentation to immerse myself in the villages where the “Guopu” people live. Using my own perspGuopu—That Touch of Red in the Wumeng Mountains

In the mountainous areas of Liushao, Fenghe, Jinyuan, and Tangdian townships in Xundian County, Kunming City, lives a branch of the Yi ethnic group that calls itself the “Guopu.” For thousands of years, they have lived in the mountainous region of Xundian, part of the Wumeng Mountains that traverse eastern Yunnan from north to south—a region with high altitudes and relatively underdeveloped economy and transportation. The “Guopu” have their own unique language, customs, and religious beliefs. They believe that all things have spirits, forming their own unique philosophy of revering, respecting, and relying on nature.

In my years of visiting and photographing this group, I have been left with a profound impression of the bold and magnificent color palette of “Guopu” attire. Men’s clothing is predominantly white linen, while for women, the “touch of red” in their attire—and the embroidery within it—vividly expresses the spiritual beliefs of their people to the fullest. The freely flying cranes, the blooming rhododendrons (mayinghua), the fascinating ancestor worship, and the beautiful aspirations for daily life—all are exquisitely and delicately displayed in full view on a large piece of red, hand-woven wool and linen fabric.

In the face of the current tide of great change, the “Guopu” are also experiencing the impacts and influences of all kinds of external cultures. Their way of life and traditional culture are also quietly and subtly changing, and of course, undergoing a qualitative transformation in this era of change. But I believe that the “touch of red” in the hearts of the “Guopu” will endure, passed down from generation to generation as the group continues to thrive and survive.

果濮 - 那乌蒙山中的一抹红

在昆明市寻甸县的六哨乡、凤合镇、金源乡和倘甸镇的山区，居住着一个自称为“果濮” 的 彝族支系。千百年来，他们居住在以南北走向贯穿的滇东乌蒙山中海拔较高、经济和交通相对滞后的寻甸山区。“果濮”有自己独特的民族语言、生活习俗和宗教信仰。他们认为万物有灵，形成了自己独特的崇尚自然、尊重自然、依赖自然的观念。

在我多年来对这一族群的走访拍摄过程中，“果濮”那奔放而豪华的服饰色调给我留下了极深刻的印象。男人的服饰以白色亚麻面料为主色调，而妇女的服饰主色调里的那一扶红——其中的刺绣，更是把自己民族信仰的精神寄托表达的淋漓尽致。那自由飞翔的仙鹤，那怒放的马樱花，那令人神往的祖先崇拜，那对日常生活的美好向往，都在一块大红色的手工机织毛麻布料里，精致细腻地展现得一览无余。

在面对当下大变革的潮流中，“果濮”也经历着各种形形色色外来文化的冲击与影响，其生存方式以及传统文化，也在不经意间悄然发生着改变，当然也在一个时代的变迁中发生着质的蜕变。但我相信，“果濮”那心中的一扶红，会在整个族群的繁𧗠生存中，生生不息，世代相传……

从2012年至今，我每年都会数次往返于这块土地，尝试着用影像记录的方式，融入到“果濮”族群居住的村村寨寨，用我的观看体验，去铭刻他们的艰辛与欢乐，去再现他们当下的发展与变化。更重要的是，我始终期望 “果濮” 这一族群那让人难以忘怀的“一抹红”，永远绽放着难以泯灭的光芒。

과복(果濮) — 우멍산 속 한 자락 붉은 빛

쿤밍시 셴뎬현(寻甸县) 륙샤오향(六哨乡), 펑허진(凤合镇), 진위엔샹(金源乡), 탕뎬진(倘甸镇) 산악 지역에는 ‘과복(果濮)’이라 자칭하는 이족(彝族)의 한 지파가 거주한다. 수백 년 동안 그들은 남북으로 뻗은 디엔동(滇东) 우멍산(乌蒙山)의 해발 고지대, 경제와 교통이 비교적 낙후된 셴뎬 산악지대에 터를 잡고 살아왔다. ‘과복’은 고유한 민족 언어와 생활 풍습, 종교 신앙을 가지고 있으며, 만물에 영혼이 깃들었다고 믿으며 자연을 숭상하고 존중하며 의지하는 독특한 세계관을 형성하고 있다.

수년간 이 집단을 찾아다니며 촬영하는 과정에서, ‘과복’의 화려하고 대담한 의상 색채가 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 남성 의상은 주로 흰색 아마포를 기본으로 하지만, 여성 의상에서는 강렬한 붉은 색이 주요 색조로 나타난다. 그 붉은 바탕 위의 자수는 민족 신앙의 정신을 생생히 표현한다. 자유롭게 날아다니는 신선학(仙鹤), 활짝 핀 말영화(马樱花), 신비로운 조상 숭배, 일상에 대한 아름다운 희망이 모두 한 폭의 붉은 수제 기계직 모마포에 정교하고 섬세하게 펼쳐져 있다.

현대의 거센 변화 물결 속에서 ‘과복’도 다양한 외래 문화의 충격과 영향을 받고 있으며, 그들의 생존 방식과 전통문화도 어느새 조용히 변화하고 있다. 물론 시대의 변천 속에서 본질적인 탈바꿈도 겪고 있다. 그러나 나는 ‘과복’ 마음속의 그 붉은 색이 그들 집단의 번영과 생존 속에서 끊임없이 이어지고 대대로 전해질 것이라 믿는다.

2012년 이래로 매년 여러 차례 이 땅을 오가며, 영상 기록을 통해 ‘과복’ 민족이 거주하는 마을 곳곳에 스며들어 그들의 고난과 기쁨을 새기고, 현재의 발전과 변화를 재현하려 노력해왔다. 더 중요한 것은, ‘과복’이라는 민족이 간직한 잊을 수 없는 ‘한 자락 붉음’이 영원히 빛나길 바라는 내 마음이다.
