“Go Inside and Ask Why the Sea is Salty!” is the second story in the World Trapped in Thought series, an artwork that expresses imagination and emotion through the element of water. Drawing on childhood memories of playing in the sea near Mulchido (Jakjakdo) in Incheon, the work captures various images of seawater as remembered from those times.

Symbolically unraveling personal experiences containing my life, dreams, memories, and emotions, the piece uses the sea as a medium to offer a fresh perspective on memories and the beauty of the ocean. For example, it vividly depicts the many expressions of water: the terrifying waves of a midsummer storm, the cold drifting ice floes of winter, swirling whirlpools, the stillness and calm of death, dazzling golden spectacles, and dreamy fantasies.

Rather than viewing water as a mere physical reality, it is presented as a living entity with a soul. Inspired by the imaginative metaphors in French poet Gaston Bachelard’s Water and Dreams, the work borrows metaphorical expressions and approaches the details of the sea through a new lens. In doing so, it conveys a sense of intimacy that allows viewers to approach the sea more closely, offering a reinterpretation of the sea’s saltiness as a unique and captivating charm.

물과 꿈

들어가서 바닷물이 왜 짠지 물어봐!는 “생각 속에 갇힌 세상” 시리즈의 두 번째 이야기로, 물을 통해 상상력과 감정을 표현한 작품으로 인천 물치도(작약도) 근처에서 물놀이를 즐겼던 어린 시절의 바다 속 추억들을 회상하며 기억 되어진 다양한 바닷물의 모습을 담고 있다. 나의 삶과 꿈, 추억과 감성을 담고 있는 경험들을 상징적으로 풀어내며, 바다라는 매개체를 통해 새로운 시각으로 바다의 추억과 아름다움을 표현했다. 

예를 들어, 한여름 폭풍 속 공포의 파도, 한겨울 바다를 떠돌아다니는 차가운 유빙, 물의 소용돌이, 잔잔하고 고요한 죽음, 화려한 황금빛 향연, 몽환적인 환상 등 다양한 물의 표정을 생생하게 담아내며, 이는 단순한 물리적 실재가 아니라, 영혼을 가진 살아 있는 실체로서의 물로 여기며, 프랑스의 은유 시인 가스통 바슐라르의 저서 <물과 꿈>에서 보여준 상상력에 영감을 받아 은유적인 표현들을 차용하고 새로운 시각으로 접근하는 방법으로 바다의 디테일한 모습들을 다양한 이미지로 표현했다. 이를 통해 바다를 더 가깝게 다가갈 수 있는 친숙함을 전달하며, 바다의 짠맛을 독특한 매력으로 새롭게 재해석하였다.
