People at the Pool beside the Beautiful Beach

Along the eastern coastline of Sydney, Australia, stretches approximately 40 kilometers of scenic beaches. At the edges of many of these beaches lie saltwater swimming pools known as “rock pools” or “ocean pools,” built into the natural contours of the rocky shoreline.

“When there’s such a beautiful beach right next to it, why swim in a pool?”As a Japanese Visitor, that was my honest reaction when I first saw people swimming in these seaside pools. This simple question sparked my curiosity and became the starting point for this photographic project.

Many of these pools, shaped by the landscape itself, have a surprisingly long history—some date back as far as the late 19th century. While a few rely on the tides to naturally circulate seawater, most are maintained regularly by local authorities and continue to be cherished as part of the city’s heritage.

Sydney’s beaches face the open ocean, where large waves and the occasional presence of sharks can make swimming hazardous. In contrast, rock pools provide a safe and accessible environment. Open 24 hours a day and free of charge, they are used year-round by people of all ages—from small children to the elderly.

Through these rock pools, deeply woven into the fabric of everyday life, I hope to share a portrait of Sydney that goes beyond its image as a tourist destination—revealing its rhythms, its people, and its quiet beauty as seen through Japanese eyes. 

아름다운 해변 옆, 바닷가 수영장 사람들

호주 시드니의 동쪽 해안선을 따라 약 40킬로미터에 걸쳐 아름다운 해변이 이어진다. 이 해변들 중 많은 곳의 가장자리에, 바위 해안의 자연 지형을 따라 만든 소금물 수영장, 일명 ‘록풀(rock pool)’ 혹은 ‘오션풀(ocean pool)’이 자리하고 있다.

이 아름다운 해변을 두고 왜 굳이 수영장에서 수영을 할까. 처음 이곳을 방문한 일본인으로서 가졌던 솔직한 의문이다. 그 단순한 질문이 호기심으로 이어졌고, 이 사진 프로젝트의 시작이 되었다.

록풀은 자연의 형상에 따라 조성된 경우가 많고, 그 역사도 오래되었다. 일부는 조수 간만의 차를 활용해 해수가 자연스럽게 순환되도록 설계되어 있지만, 대부분은 지방 자치단체에 의해 정기적으로 관리되며 도시의 유산으로 간주되고 있다.

시드니의 해변은 탁 트인 바다를 마주하고 있어 큰 파도나 상어 출몰 등으로 인해 수영이 위험할 수 있다. 반면, 록풀은 누구나 안전하게 이용할 수 있는 공간이다. 연중무휴, 하루 24시간 개방되어 있으며, 어린아이부터 노인까지 다양한 연령층이 자유롭게 이용하고 있다.

록풀은 관광지로서의 시드니가 아닌, 그곳에 살아가는 사람들의 일상과 리듬, 그리고 조용한 아름다움을 보여준다. 일본인의 시선으로 바라본 시드니의 또 다른 풍경을 이 공간을 통해 전하고자 한다.

Japanese photographer Noriko Kukimoto is well-regarded for capturing everyday objects and personal memories through her distinctively delicate and poetic lens. She primarily works within the genre of still life photography, creating a quiet yet profoundly resonant contemplative atmosphere. Skillfully manipulating light and shadow, she imbues ordinary objects with special vitality and meaning. Under soft, natural light, she calmly reveals the inherent textures, subtle colors, and the traces of time embedded within her subjects. Her photographs often adopt an extremely restrained, minimalist composition and employ a subdued color palette—sometimes approaching monochrome—focusing on gently evoking inner emotions rather than providing strong visual stimuli, pursuing a static beauty over flamboyance.

Kukimoto’s work explores universal themes such as memory, the passage of time, the unique presence of objects, and the preciousness of everyday life that we often overlook. Her renowned series “1972,” featuring objects made in the year of her birth, exemplifies her artistic world by simultaneously capturing personal memories and the era’s ambiance. Through such endeavors, she delicately visualizes unseen stories and the weight of emotions, illustrating how ordinary items connect to personal histories and stir feelings. Her photography prompts viewers to quietly confront their own lives and memories, offering a serene moment of reflection to reconsider the beauty and significance hidden within the small things of daily life. Noriko Kukimoto is recognized as a significant artist in the contemporary Japanese photography scene, consistently expanding her unique artistic world based on a personal and delicate sensibility.

일본의 사진작가 쿠키모토 노리코는 일상적인 사물과 개인적인 기억들을 자신만의 섬세하고 시적인 시선으로 포착하는 것으로 잘 알려져 있다. 그녀는 주로 정물 사진이라는 장르를 통해, 조용하면서도 깊은 울림을 주는 관조적인 분위기를 만들어낸다. 빛과 그림자를 능숙하게 다루어 평범한 오브제에 특별한 생명력과 의미를 부여하며, 부드러운 자연광 아래서는 대상이 지닌 본연의 질감, 은은한 색감, 그리고 그 안에 담긴 시간의 흔적들을 차분하게 드러낸다. 그녀의 사진은 종종 극도로 절제된 미니멀한 구성을 취하며, 화려함보다는 정적인 아름다움을 추구하는 절제된 색감(때로는 흑백에 가까운 모노톤)을 통해 시각적 자극보다는 내면의 감정을 부드럽게 환기시키는 데 집중한다.

쿠키모토의 작품은 기억, 시간의 흐름, 사물의 고유한 존재감, 그리고 우리가 쉽게 지나치는 일상의 소중함과 같은 보편적인 주제들을 탐구한다. 특히 작가가 태어난 해에 만들어진 물건들을 촬영한 “1972” 시리즈는 개인적인 기억과 시대의 분위기를 동시에 담아내며 그녀의 작품 세계를 대표한다. 이러한 작업을 통해 그녀는 눈에 보이지 않는 이야기와 감정의 무게를 섬세하게 시각화하며, 평범한 사물들이 개인의 역사와 어떻게 연결되고 감정을 불러일으키는지 보여준다. 그녀의 사진은 보는 이로 하여금 자신의 삶과 기억을 조용히 대면하게 만들며, 일상의 소소한 것들 속에 숨겨진 아름다움과 의미를 되새기게 하는 고요한 성찰의 시간을 제공한다. 쿠키모토 노리코는 일본 현대 사진계에서 개인적이고 섬세한 감수성을 바탕으로 독창적인 작품 세계를 꾸준히 확장해 나가고 있는 중요한 작가로 평가받는다.
