International University Photography Festival

The International University Photography Festival began in 2012 at Harbin University in China, where photography professors from four countries—South Korea, China, Japan, and the United States—gathered to promote artistic exchange among students. The commitment to sharing global trends in photographic art and broadening the artistic sense and vision of future generations of photographers through continuous exchange among international universities has steadily continued ever since. These efforts have borne distinct fruit year after year. In 2026, the festival has grown into the world's largest university photography festival, with numerous students and professors participating from 87 universities across 13 countries, including China, Japan, the United States, Poland, Turkey, Iran, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Malaysia, France, Mongolia, and India.

The Incheon International University Photography Festival is centered around the theme, "Identity of Photography." The history of photography began with 19th-century daguerreotypes and has undergone continuous technological evolution across various material bases, including paper, glass, and celluloid acetate. The photographic support has changed according to the technology and sensibility of each era. Today, we stand at a time when the definition of photography is expanding beyond square pixels to include artificial intelligence prompt-based image generation. Photography has always existed at the boundaries of technology, society, and art, and even at this very moment, it is rewriting its own identity.

This exhibition offers an opportunity to directly experience 19th-century analog wet plate photography. At the same time, viewers can appreciate a broad spectrum of works ranging from classical, handcrafted techniques to contemporary photographic practices utilizing cutting-edge digital technology. Rather than merely listing the past and the present side by side, this serves as an artistic proposition that empirically demonstrates how the identity of photographic art is expanding.

The International University Photography Festival goes beyond a mere venue for sharing the artistic achievements of professors and students from around the world. It is a place to ask once again, within the time and space of "here and now," "What is photography?" and to reflect together on how the inherent aesthetics and sensibilities of photography are preserved and evolved amidst rapid changes in technology and media. Furthermore, it aims to provide insights into the future direction of photographic art education and serve as an educational platform that fosters creativity and critical perspectives through intercollegiate exchange.

The young photographic artists participating in this festival will share their cultural backgrounds and sensibilities, expanding their own artistic language in the process. We hope this exhibition serves as a stepping stone for their artistic growth rather than just a venue for presentation. In addition, we hope that this event, which explores the future direction of today's photographic art, will become a long-remembered artistic experience for us all.

세계대학사진축전은 2012년, 중국 하얼빈대학교에서 한·중·일·미 4개국의 사진 관련 학과 교수들이 모여 학생 간 예술 교류를 도모하며 처음 시작되었습니다. 사진예술의 세계적 흐름을 공유하고, 각국 대학 간의 지속적인 교류를 통해 미래 세대 사진가들의 예술적 감각과 시야를 확장하고자 했던 의지는 이후 꾸준히 이어져 왔습니다. 그 결실은 해를 거듭할수록 뚜렷하게 드러났고, 2026년 올해 중국, 일본, 미국, 폴란드, 튀르키예, 이란, 영국, 남아프리카공화국, 말레이시아, 프랑스, 몽골, 인도 등 총 13개국 87개 대학에서 많은 학생과 교수들이 참여하는, 명실상부한 세계 최대 규모의 대학 사진 축전으로 성장하였습니다.

인천세계대학사진축전은 “사진의 정체성: Identity of Photography”라는 주제를 중심으로 진행되고 있습니다. 사진의 역사는 19세기 은판사진술에서 출발하여, 종이, 유리, 셀룰로이드 아세테이트 등 다양한 물질적 기반 위에서 기술적 진화를 거듭해 왔습니다. 사진의 지지체는 시대의 기술과 감각에 따라 변화해 왔으며, 오늘날 우리는 정사각형 픽셀을 넘어, 인공지능 프롬프트 기반의 이미지 생성까지 사진의 정의가 확장되는 시기에 놓여 있습니다. 사진은 언제나 기술과 사회, 예술의 경계에서 존재해 왔으며, 지금 이 순간에도 그 정체성을 새롭게 써 내려가고 있습니다.

이번 전시에서는 19세기 아날로그 습판사진술을 직접 체험해볼 수 있는 기회를 제공함과 동시에, 고전적인 수작업 방식의 작품부터 첨단 디지털 기술을 활용한 현대적 사진 작업에 이르기까지 폭넓은 스펙트럼의 작업들을 감상할 수 있습니다. 이는 단지 과거와 현재를 나열하는 데 그치지 않고, 사진예술의 정체성이 어떻게 확장되고 있는지를 실증적으로 보여주는 하나의 예술적 제안이기도 합니다.

세계대학사진축전은 단지 각국의 대학 교수와 학생들의 예술적 성과를 공유하는 자리를 넘어 ‘지금, 여기’라는 시공간 속에서 ‘사진이란 무엇인가’를 되묻고, 기술과 매체의 급변 속에서도 사진이 지닌 고유한 미학과 감수성은 어떻게 보존되고 진화하는지를 함께 사유해보는 자리입니다. 더불어, 사진예술 교육이 앞으로 어떠한 방향으로 나아가야 할지에 대한 통찰을 제공하며, 대학 간의 교류를 통해 창의성과 비판적 시각을 키우는 교육적 장으로도 기능하고자 합니다.

이번 축전에 참여한 젊은 사진예술가들은 서로의 문화적 배경과 감각을 나누며, 그 안에서 자신만의 예술 언어를 확장해 나갈 것입니다. 이 전시가 그들에게 단순한 발표의 자리를 넘어, 예술적 성장을 위한 디딤돌이 되기를 기대합니다. 아울러, 오늘의 사진예술이 나아갈 방향을 함께 모색하는 이 자리가, 우리 모두에게 오래도록 기억될 예술적 경험이 되기를 바랍니다.
