Ecosistema humano ( Human’s environment)

These photographs are the result of years of exploration of the landscape and human beings. The photographer’s lens has been to look for a landscape with people and people in a landscape, urban or natural. I have traveled through different countries and continents and I have been able to verify that all people have different customs and cultures, different landscapes, but the differences are more superficial than profound. Many times I have recognized landscapes of my land in other countries, or I have even thought I recognized people I knew.

After many years doing landscape photography, I began to turn my subject of attention towards humans, in all their ages, children, young people, the elderly and their gazes and relationships with each other. I changed my “Asturian” geography atlas for an atlas of humans in which I tried to permanently leave all the sensations that those looks or people transmitted to me. First they were small silhouettes within a landscape, then they were elements that complemented the urban environment, until little by little I have realized that now humans are the center, especially their eyes that manage to catch my attention and photographic gaze with force.

인간 생태계 (Ecosistema humano)

이 사진들은 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 풍경과 인간을 탐색한 결과물이다. 사진가의 렌즈는 언제나 사람과 함께 있는 풍경, 그리고 풍경 속의 사람을 찾아왔다. 그 풍경은 도시일 수도, 자연일 수도 있다. 나는 여러 나라와 대륙을 여행하면서, 사람마다 서로 다른 문화와 관습, 그리고 서로 다른 풍경 속에 살고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 그 차이는 깊은 곳보다는 겉으로 드러나는 부분에 있다는 것도 알게 되었다. 때로는 타국에서 내 고향의 풍경을 본 듯한 착각을 했고, 심지어는 낯선 사람에게서도 익숙한 이의 얼굴을 떠올리기도 했다.

오랜 시간 풍경 사진에 몰두해오던 나는 점차 시선의 초점을 인간으로 옮기게 되었다. 아이들과 젊은이들, 노인들, 그리고 그들의 시선과 서로 간의 관계에 주목하기 시작했다. 나는 내 손에 들려 있던 ‘아스투리아스 지리 교과서’를 내려놓고, 인간의 지리학으로 채운 새로운 아틀라스를 만들기 시작했다. 그 안에 내가 만난 사람들의 시선이 전해준 감정과 인상을 영원히 남기고자 했다. 처음에는 풍경 속의 작은 실루엣이었던 인간이 점차 도시 환경을 구성하는 요소가 되었고, 이제는 인간 그 자체가 사진의 중심이 되었다. 특히 인간의 ‘눈빛’은 내 시선을 사로잡고, 나의 사진적 응시에 강한 힘으로 다가온다.

루이스 호세 비힐-에스칼레라는 1963년 스페인 북부 아스투리아스 지방의 랑그레우에서 태어났다. 아스투리아스 사진 연맹(FAAF)에서 마스터 칭호를, 스페인 사진 연맹(CEF)에서 마스터와 브론즈 심사위원 칭호를 받았으며, 국제사진예술연맹(FIAP)으로부터는 공로를 인정받아 서비스 공로 우수훈장(ESFIAP)을 수여받았다. 터키의 실레 사라트 사라이 협회(Sille Sarat Sarayi Association)에서는 명예 사진가로 선정되었다. 현재 랑그레우에 위치한 FIAP 전시장 ‘세메예스 델 문두(Semeyes del Mundu)’의 관장을 맡고 있다.

그는 1988년 랑그레우의 F15 협회에서 아날로그 SLR 카메라와 흑백 암실 작업으로 사진 활동을 시작했다. 이후 슬라이드 필름과 디지털 포맷으로 작업을 확장하며 사진에 대한 열정을 이어왔다. 지금까지 여러 단체전과 공동 전시에 참여했으며, 개인전도 다수 개최했다. 다양한 책을 출간하고 삽화를 맡기도 했으며, 국내외 여러 사진 공모전에서 심사위원으로 활동했다. 또한 다수의 국내외 사진 공모전에서 수상한 바 있다.

Luis José Vigil-Escalera  was born in 1963 in LLangréu, Asturies , in north of Spain. Master by the Asturian Federation of Photography (FAAF); Master and Bronze Judge by the Spanish Federation of Photography (CEF); Excellence for services rendered by the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP)-ESFIA; Honorable Photographer by the Sille Sarat Sarayi Association of Turkey. Director of the FIAP Exhibition Center in Llangréu, Semeyes del Mundu.

Luis began his photographic journey in 1988 with analog SLR cameras and black-and-white lab development at the F15 association in Llangréu, continuing his passion with slide film and digital formats in 2004.

He has participated in numerous group or shared exhibitions, has held several individual exhibitions, published and illustrated numerous books. Jury in various national and international competitions, and has won several awards in both national and international competitions.
