Philippe-H. Claudel

Philippe H. Claudel is a visual artist born in 1960 in the Hautes-Vosges region of France. 

Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Nancy, his work revolves around the theme of transformation — both of the outer landscape and of inner identity. 

The landscape photographs from the UpsideDown series are captured in the wild. Ice, rain, and the pale glow of dawn require multiple hikes to remote high-altitude ponds. The aim is to be present when the water is perfectly still, before the sun or the wind rise. 

No compositing, no digital editing: the images are simply flipped upside down, challenging our gaze and our sense of the future. 

In this way, visible landscapes begin to disintegrate, erode or vanish — mirroring the invisible, interior landscapes deep within ourselves. 

The organic masks from the InsideOut series are crafted from materials collected in the UpsideDown landscapes: leaves, flowers, roots, bark, seeds. 

They are images of emotional states — our inner landscapes: anxiety, fear, shock… They become "skins of the self," remnants shed from a past inner time. 

Some of them can be worn, as in the theatre of life.

이처럼, 가시적인 풍경은 해체되고, 부식되며, 사라지기도 합니다. 마치 우리 내면 깊은 곳에존재하는 비가시적인 풍경처럼 말입니다.

InsideOut 시리즈의 유기적 가면들은 UpsideDown 시리즈 속 풍경에서 수집한 재료들—나뭇잎, 꽃, 뿌리, 나무껍질, 씨앗—로 만들어졌습니다.

이 가면들은 감정과 내면 상태의 형상들입니다. 불안, 공포, 충격...

즉, 과거의 나의 피부, 내면 시간 속에서 벗겨진 껍질이라 할 수 있습니다.

일부 가면은 실제로 착용이 가능하며, 삶이라는 무대에서 사용될 수 있습니다.
