In Search of Shambhala

In the towering mountains of northwestern Yunnan lies a mysterious and fervent land—Shangri-La. For many years, whenever people mention Shangri-La, they inevitably talk about how enchanting and magnificent its natural scenery is, often overlooking the humanistic aspect of its culture—the spiritual harmony between people and the land.

I remember a few years ago, when I was discussing how best to express Shangri-La’s beauty with a local Tibetan writer, he said to me with deep meaning, “People often describe Shangri-La’s landscape as a ‘heaven on earth’ or a ‘paradise beyond the world.’ But think about it—if there were no people, no Tibetans or other ethnic minorities coexisting harmoniously with the land, could it truly be called a paradise?”

Indeed, in Shangri-La, you can easily come into contact with the natural beauty gifted by the earth. However, if you wish to enter the spiritual realm of Shangri-La, that is much harder.

Yes, Shambhala is not far away. What is distant is how we each use our hearts to truly feel Shangri-La—how, in the process of observing the world, we can mindfully record the people and events that move us. We should transform our inner reflections into motivation, turning our feelings into a perception of the material world, and further, into an awareness that carries deeper meaning on paper. In doing so, we allow the “slices of time” to become eternal in our images.

Shambhala is not far. It is there. You are there. It is in my heart.

샴발라를 찾아서

운남성의 서북부, 숲이 우거진 고산지대에는 신비로운 열정의 땅—샹그릴라(香格里拉)가 있다. 수년간, 사람들은 샹그릴라를 말할 때면 그 자연 풍경이 얼마나 매혹적이고 웅장한지에 대해 이야기하며, 종종 이곳의 인간적 풍경, 문화적 정서, 그리고 이곳에 살아가는 사람들과의 조화로운 공존이라는 인문적 정신은 간과하곤 한다.

몇 해 전, 나는 한 현지 티베트족 작가와 샹그릴라의 아름다움을 어떻게 표현할 것인지 이야기를 나눈 적이 있다. 그때 그는 의미심장한 말로 이렇게 이야기했다. “사람들은 샹그릴라의 자연미를 두고 ‘인간의 천국’, ‘세속을 벗어난 이상향’이라 표현하지만, 한번 생각해보세요. 만약 이곳에 사람이 없다면, 티베트족이나 다른 소수민족들이 함께 살아가지 않는다면, 과연 ‘이상향’이라 부를 수 있을까요?”

샹그릴라에서는 분명 대자연이 이 땅에 부여한 아름다움을 쉽게 마주할 수 있다. 그러나 이곳의 정신적 경지에 다가가고자 한다면, 이야기는 또 다르다.

그렇다. 샴발라는 멀지 않다. 멀게 느껴지는 것은 바로 우리가 각자의 마음으로 샹그릴라를 어떻게 느끼느냐이다. 우리가 이 세계를 바라보는 과정에서 무엇에 감동했는지, 그 감동을 주는 사람과 사건들을 어떻게 마음으로 기록하느냐가 중요하다. 그리고 그 마음의 사유를 동력으로 바꾸고, 물질적 세계의 표면을 감각으로 받아들이며, 그것을 다시 의식의 차원으로 전환해 ‘종이 위의 기록’으로 남기는 일—바로 그것이 시간의 조각들을 우리의 영상 속에서 영원하게 만드는 것이다.

샴발라는 멀지 않다. 그곳에 있다. 당신이 있는 그곳, 그리고 나의 마음속에 있다.
