Incheon is a profoundly significant historical site.

The renowned British historian Arnold Joseph Toynbee (April 14, 1889 – October 22, 1975) once proclaimed, “The greatest tragedy in human history is that mankind learns nothing from its past.” These words carry profound significance in many ways. When we forget the past, we are bound to repeat the same mistakes. Though I have lived in Incheon for over ten years, I realized I knew almost nothing about its history. As shown in the cover photo, *Incheon is a historically significant region*—thus, I chose the theme “Incheon is a Meaningful Historical Zone.”

However, as I attempted to explore Incheon’s modern history through photography, I was faced with several regrets.First, I felt limited by my lack of skill in adequately expressing history through images. Second, my insufficient historical knowledge—especially of Incheon—made it difficult to find appropriate subjects. Third, there were certain areas I couldn’t access for various reasons, and thus couldn’t photograph them. Despite these challenges, I did my best to explore and capture images, and through the process, I came to understand a bit more about Incheon’s modern history. Although many other artists have already addressed this topic and produced numerous works, I made a conscious effort not to reference them, instead aiming to express my own perspective in my own way.

영국의 유명한 역사학자 Arnold Joshep Toynbee(1889. 4. 14~1975. 10. 22)는 “인류에게 가장 큰 비극은 지나간 역사에서 아무런 교훈도 얻지 못한다는 데 있다”라고 천명한 바 있다. 참으로 여러 모로 시사하는 바가 크다. 과거를 잊어버리면 또 다시 같은 실수를 반복하게 마련이다. 10여년을 인천에 살면서 인천의 역사를 전혀 모르고 살아왔다.

표지 사진에서 보여주듯이 ‘인천은 의미심장한 역사지대’인데 말이다(그래서 주제를 ‘인천은 의미심장한 역사지대다’로 정했다). 막상 인천의 근대사를 사진으로 살펴보고자 하니 여러 가지로 아쉬움이 많았다. 우선은 역사를 사진으로 표현함에 있어 실력이 미천하여 제대로 표현하지 못한 아쉬움이 많았고, 두 번째로는 역사적 지식(특별히 인천에 대한 역사적 지식)이 부족하여 적절한 소재를 찾아내지 못한 아쉬움이다. 세 번째는 이런 저런 이유로 접근이 불가하여 사진으로 담지 못한 아쉬움이다. 어쨌거나 나름 부지런히 사진을 담으러 다녔고, 그러면서 인천의 근대사에 대해 조금은 알게 된 것 같다. 이미 많은 작가들이 이 부분을 터치했고 많은 작품들이 있지만, 그것들을 보지 않고 나름대로의 표현을 하려고 애썼음을 밝혀 둔다.
